Thie sickness of the day of the Hare is a curse of the god of the southern direction. Face to the east and read the Heart Sutra three times. [While praying] face the sick horse [towards the sutra as though it is also] in prayer.
This illness is called bakokukotoku. For medicine, take cormorant feathers burnt to ash, and feed it [to the horse] in water. Also, once take funabara leaves, burn this to ash, mix it well, and feed it [to the horse] in good sake. For needling, use the kage needle point. Pierce the hizen [needle point]. Apply moxibustion.
In 2021, my translation of an old Japanese text on horse medicine (title unknown) was part of Dr. David Ramey’s Horses and Horse Medicine in Muromachi Japan. This book examines Japan’s history of horse medicine primarily by looking at the mysterious manuscript, with analysis by Dr. Ramey, myself and Dr. Katja Triplett. I look forward to further looking into this subject.
